Core Curriculum
The program we use in our classroom lesson plans is Second Step. It has been a program that has been used by our school district for many years and recently we just adopted to the newest edition. The newest edition includes videos, worksheets, and colored images with more relevant stories that students can connect to. These lessons are once a week all year long where students will be receiving information about how to manage their emotions, have empathy for others, being a good friend, standing up to bullying, how to be a respectful learner, and to have resilience. If you have more questions or interest in the program below are two links about the effectiveness of the program and about the program itself.
GroupAs student go through the school year, teachers, staff, and parents may notice students who may need more support. This could be friendship struggles, managing emotions, or making decisions. Group counseling is designed to be a positive environment for students to express themselves and develop personal/social skills. Students in group counseling will meet with other peers and the counselor once a week during the school day for 30 minutes at a time that is least interruptive of instructional time for 7 weeks. In order to be in group, there would need to be a permission slip signed.

IndividualStudent who are needing more one on one support can also participate in individual counseling. This type of counseling is short term ranging from 6-8 weeks. It is a stepping stone into what outside counseling can look like. The modality of counseling I use is solution-focused, motivational interviewing, and compassion focused. These modalities allow me to help encourage students to solve problems from internal motivation instead of getting advice. If you have any more questions about individual counseling please reach out to me.

Responsive Services
While most of the services we offer are preventative in nature there can be times where students have problems on any given day. It could be conflict, behavior, or emotionally overwhelmed. So students are allow to come visit my room to get support. Teachers and staff may send students to visit me if they also need a break to then return to the classroom after. This is so students can manage what is happening and then return to class ready to be learners. Cause sometimes students just need a moment to be small humans before they can learn.
Referrals/Collaborations
If your student is receiving counseling services outside of school, you can always have your student's counselor and myself collaborate together to create wrap around services. This is for when students learn new strategies, we can impalement them in the school as well. Or if the counselor is interested in learning more about how a student is in school we can provide that information. This requires paperwork to be signed, so contact me if you have questions or are interested.
I also work with teachers on how to help students in class. This could be providing context to behavior, or creating a plan to help that student be successful. It is important to me that I support our teachers in any way possible to make their classroom the best possible for learning. This is also true for parents. If you are in need of helping your student at home, you can also contact me for support.
If you are looking for more information for supporting your student you can always go to our parent resource page, or contact me. While I am here for your student I am also here to support our parents as well.
